The battle between the Super-family and the Superman Revenge Squad is finally here! And it's... well, it's alright. With as much as this story arc has been building up this battle, it was all a bit anticlimactic.
Superman is still blind, but now New-Superman, Supergirl, Superwoman, Steel, and Lex Luthor are at his side to even the odds. Superman's main goal is to ensure Lois and Jonathan escape without Zod discovering their existence and stopping them. As the two Kryptonians duke it out, the battle ensues between the rest of the heroes & villains, but the focus is really on Superman and Zod. By the end of the issue, the battle seems to be far from over, meaning there's plenty of story left to tell in this arc.
I felt a little let down that we didn't see more of the Super-family in battle, but the Zod/Superman dialogue was good and helped drive the story in an interesting direction. Superman does something very uncharacteristic towards the end of the issue towards the end of the issue, which I had some problems with. Without giving away too much, I'll just say he seems to disregard the well-being of Lois and Jonathan.
Viktor Bogdanovic's art on this issue was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the book. There's a lot of characters to represent, but he did an excellent job with each character; especially with Zod. Zod has a very threatening and almost insane appearance, which makes him feel like a true danger.
6 / 10
Action Comics #983 progressed this story arc in an enjoyable, yet predictable way. The battle between the Super-family and the Revenge Squad ultimately takes a back seat to Superman and Zod's fight, which was disappointing. But, there's no sign of this story arc slowing down any time soon, and I still have high hopes for the upcoming conclusion.
